Other guides
This section contains a table of other guides you might like to read.
Other guides
Method | Description |
---|---|
Speak From Day One | For people who value communicating, based on the premise that the biggest barrier to communication is speaking practice, and grammar is less important |
Iversen’s Guide to Learning Languages | A very large and theory-focused post on a language learning forum dedicated to one man’s method |
Refold | A guide that takes the stance one should focus heavily on input |
Steve Kaufmann: My Method for Learning Languages from Scratch | A video where Steve Kaufmann outlines how he starts from scratch, emphasising the heavy use of listening in combination with reading |
How I Reached Near-Native Spanish and Took the C2 Exam in Under 5 Years | One person’s method for Spanish, the advice applies to any language |
Beware: some resources out there (not necessarily the ones listed) like to present their method as the best way to learn, but the reality is many very different methods can all work pretty well.
In addition, the methods outlined in other guides might be more optimal for people with different goals. For example, the Speak From Day One method is strongly optimised towards people who want to speak with minimal study.
Finally, some guides (not necessarily the ones listed) might impress you with some great ideas, and follow them if you like, but beware of paywalls. I’ve yet to see any ideas can’t be found somewhere in this guide that wasn’t simply a very specific activity.
